From the mid-1950s, under the newly-created Meiji government, Japan experienced dramatic social and political change. It was during this period that a new genre of ukiyo-e prints or ‘civilisation and enlightenment pictures’ developed, depicting the rapid modernisation in Tokyo and the nearby port of Yokohama. These prints often feature symbols of modernisation such as Western-style brick and stone buildings, iron bridges, steam trains and trams. Here, Toyohara Chikanobu’s view of Ueno Park – one of the few open spaces in the new capital – shows Edo-ites viewing cherry blossom by the light of recently introduced gas lamps.
