The Story Behind The Artwork:
The Suijin Woods and Massaki on the Sumida River
From the series 100 Famous Views of Edo, 1856
By Utagawa Hiroshige
Ashmolean Museum (EAX.4351)
In the final two years of his life, the great woodblock print designer Utagawa Hiroshige created the most ambitious series of his career, showing scenes from his native city Edo (renamed Tokyo in 1868). One Hundred Famous Views of Edo depicted important temples, shrines and sites celebrated for their poetic and historical associations. Here, through the dramatic and beautiful framing double cherry, the viewer looks from the embankment over the shrine. The pedestrians on the left walk towards the Hashiba Ferry, and in the distance in Mount Tsukuba.
